Grand Sight of China’s Intangible Cultural Heritages

International Online report (Journalist based in Hebei: Xu Jiangfan): Inner painting art is a unique traditional art of China. It is a kind of reverse direction painting with special deformed fine brush in the inner wall of snuff bottle. The subject matters include figure, landscape, flowers and birds, calligraphy, etc. The snuff bottles are made from transparent glass, crystal, amber and other materials. The inner painting looks exquisite, delicate and beautiful in colors from the outside. Hengshui Municipality in Hebei Province in the northern part of China is nominated as the China Town of Inner Painting by the Ministry of Culture of the People’s Republic of China. In 2006, Hengshui inner painting was enlisted in the first national intangible cultural heritage list and Wang Xisan, the founder of Hengshui inner painting was also determined as the inheritor of the heritage.

The inner painted snuff bottle of China originated in the reign of Emperor Qianlong in the Qing Dynasty. The inner painting art is divided into four factions, namely, the Beijing Faction, Hebei Faction, Shandong Faction and Guangdong Faction. When inner painting just came into being, it mainly adopted the traditional Chinese painting skills and depended on drawing the outlines and added details with brush. The Hebei Faction inner painting just refers to Hengshui inner painting. Wang Xisan, the founder integrates western oil painting skills into the skills of inner painting thus breaks the limit of the traditional monotonous water color painting. The combination of Chinese and Western elements carries forward the inner painting art.
